How To Save A Choking Baby

Introduction

Do you know what to do if your baby is choking? If not, not to worry, we are here to help. The following are the steps you can follow in case of an emergency. Remember to share this post to raise awareness about these life saving techniques.

1. Check For Consciousness And Call 911

Check to see if your baby is conscious. If they are conscious but don’t seem to be coughing or breathing, call 911 and perform the steps in the following choking rescue procedure specially designed for babies.

2. Position Your Baby

While holding the baby in one hand, use the heel of your other hand to give the baby firm slaps on the back between their shoulder blades. If you can see the object in the baby’s mouth you can try removing it with your fingers. If you can’t see the object, don’t try removing it with your fingers as this could make the problem worse. In most cases, this step should dislodge the object. If not, further action should be taken. You can find this on the next page.

3. Chest Compressions

If the baby still can’t breath, turn the baby on their back and give 5 chest compressions while supporting the head and neck. To do this, using two fingers, push inwards and upwards about a half an inch below the nipple. Be sure to continuously check the baby’s mouth for the object so you can remove it once it comes out.

4. Repeat and CPR

Continue alternating between slapping the baby’s baby and chest compressions until the object is forced out and the airway is clear. If the baby is not breathing, you’ll need to perform CPR. You can find the steps to perform CPR on the following pages.

CPR: Step 1 30 Chest Compressions

Use the same technique you used before except this time give 30 chest compressions. Try to perform about 30 chest compressions per minute

5. Fever

CPR Step 2: Open The Airway

Place the baby on the floor and kneel beside them. Placing one hand on the baby’s forehead, gently tip the baby’s head back while using the other hand to live the baby’s chin.

CPR Step 3: Breaths

You’ve probably seen this in movies. This is the step where you seal your lips around the baby’s mouth and nose and blow in to the baby’s lungs for around a second. Make sure that the chest is rising with each breath.

Prevention: Make Sure Toys Are Safe

Check every toy and make sure that it is safe for the baby. If a toy has loose parts or small pieces that can come off and become lodged in the baby’s throat, throw it away. Most toys are labeled by age, which most of the time is a good sign of whether its safe or not.

8. Pulling And Rubbing The Face

Prevention: Keep Small Objects Away

Coins, batteries, earrings, buttons, candy – these are all things that can be choking hazards for small babies. Make sure to scan the house for things your baby could choke on, and anything that is small enough to choke on keep out of reach. This is especially important when your baby begins to crawl and become more independent.

9. Gums Are Red And Raw

Prevention: Choose Foods Wisely

Most foods that are okay for adults to eat can be choking hazards for babies. This includes but is not limited to; candy, meats, grapes, popcorn, and peanut butter. Talk to your baby’s doctor for any questions on whether specific foods are safe for your baby
